The first Documentary Family Awards of 2019 received submissions from photographers in 40 different countries around the world. Guest judges for the preliminary round were documentary photographers Kholood Eid and Khalilah Hall and WSJ photo editor Parker Eshelman. They independently reviewed every single submission, deciding on the 697 finalists to move forward to the final round.⠀

“I like it’s a kind of a postcard”

On March 27, 2019, the DFA streamed online the final round of judging in its entirety for over 9 hours. Available worldwide, viewers from 63 countries watched the award selection process. Commentary from judges Kirsten Bethmann, Kholood Eid and Jenna Shouldice throughout the process provided valuable insight into how we can all make better photographs. At the heart of the DFA’s is a strong commitment. For example there is a commitment to transparency and education, making the decision to continue streaming each final round an easy one. After the final judging concluded, 159 photos received awards or honorable mentions.⠀
